WHAT IT’S LIKE

The underwater experience for people who “don’t do” underwater

Sea walking is the one activity we can recommend to almost anyone in the group — the grandparent who never learned to swim, the ten-year-old who’s nervous about the sea, the friend who refuses to put their face in the water. You wear a large weighted helmet that rests on your shoulders, not your head. Air is pumped into it constantly, so there’s an air pocket around your whole face. You breathe normally, your hair stays dry, and you can even wear your glasses right up until the helmet goes on.

You climb down a ladder to a flat, roped platform about 5–7 metres down, where a trained diver walks beside you the entire time. Reef fish come astonishingly close — the crew usually carries a little food, so you’ll have sergeant-majors and butterflyfish swirling around your hands within seconds. It lasts around 15–20 minutes underwater. It feels like a moon-walk with fish, and it’s genuinely the highlight of a lot of family trips.

Why families pick it

  • Zero swimming ability required
  • Head, hair and face stay completely dry
  • A diver holds your hand start to finish
  • Underwater photos usually included by the operator

HOW IT WORKS

Four steps to the sea floor

Start to finish, you’re never on your own — a diver and boat crew manage every part of it.

STEP 1

Kit up on the boat

A short safety brief and a quick health check, then the crew fits the weighted helmet over your shoulders. Nothing goes in your mouth.

STEP 2

Climb down the ladder

You step down a sturdy ladder into the water. A diver is right there holding on, guiding you the whole descent.

STEP 3

Just breathe

A continuous air supply feeds the helmet, so you breathe exactly as you do on land. No mouthpiece, no breath-holding, no panic.

STEP 4

Walk the reef

Stroll the roped platform at 5–7 m for 15–20 minutes while fish crowd around. Signal any time you want to come up.

WHERE YOU’LL WALK & WHO CAN JOIN

Two locations, sensible limits

Sea walking runs from two spots in the islands. We’ll slot it into whichever suits your route — and we’re upfront about who it isn’t right for.

North Bay Island

Port Blair

The most popular spot — a short boat ride from Port Blair jetty. Ideal if you’re staying near the capital or doing the Ross & North Bay day trip.

Best for Port Blair-based itineraries

Elephant Beach

Havelock

Sea walking here pairs naturally with a Havelock snorkelling day. Reached by boat from Havelock jetty, with a lively shallow reef.

Best for Havelock-based itineraries

Age, weight & health

Please note

Suitable roughly age 7–65. Not advised if you’re pregnant or have heart, lung, ear or sinus conditions, or recent surgery. You’ll fill a short health declaration on the day.

GOOD TO KNOW

Sea walking questions, answered

The honest answers we give on WhatsApp every day.

Do I really not need to know swimming?

Correct — and it’s the whole reason the activity exists. You stand and walk on a flat platform in shallow water while a diver holds your hand. The helmet keeps your head dry and feeds continuous air, so there’s nothing to “do” except breathe and look around. It’s the one underwater activity we happily recommend for young kids and non-swimming grandparents.

Will my hair get wet, and can I wear my glasses?

Your head and face stay completely dry inside the helmet, so hairstyles and most makeup survive the walk. Spectacles have to come off just before the helmet is fitted (contact lenses are fine to keep in). Leave watches and loose jewellery on the boat to be safe.

Is it done at North Bay or Elephant Beach?

Both. North Bay Island, a short boat ride from Port Blair, is the most common location and easiest to combine with the Ross & North Bay day trip. Elephant Beach on Havelock is the alternative and pairs well with a Havelock snorkelling day. We’ll place it wherever it fits your itinerary best.
