THE SLOW ISLAND

Small, green and gloriously unhurried

If Havelock is the star, Neil Island — now Shaheed Dweep — is the quiet one you’ll be glad you didn’t skip. It’s the smallest of the three main islands, a patchwork of paddy fields, banana plantations and cycle-friendly lanes, ringed by beaches you can often have almost to yourself. Everything is close; you can see the whole island in a day, and most of our travellers wish they’d stayed two.

Neil is best framed as a one-night add-on — a gentle full-stop after the buzz of Havelock, or a peaceful base for couples and repeat visitors who’ve already ticked off Radhanagar. There’s no rush here, and that’s the point: an afternoon on Bharatpur’s calm reef, a sunset at Laxmanpur, a sunrise at Sitapur, and you’ve experienced the best of it. We slot it into your ferry chain so the island-hop feels effortless.

THINGS TO DO ON NEIL

Four beaches, one easy day

Neil’s beaches are named after characters from the Ramayana — and each has its own moment of the day.

Calm turquoise shallows at Bharatpur Beach, Neil Island, Andaman

Reef & calm water

Bharatpur Beach

Neil’s main beach — shallow, calm and coral-rich, right by the jetty. Glass-bottom boat rides, snorkelling and a gentle swim make it the family favourite of the island.

Golden sunset over the sea at Laxmanpur Beach, Neil Island, Andaman

Sunset

Laxmanpur Beach

A long, soft-sand beach on the west coast and the island’s celebrated sunset spot. Arrive an hour before dusk, walk out on the sandbar and watch the sky change over the water.

Natural rock bridge formation at low tide, Neil Island, Andaman

Low tide only

Natural Rock Bridge

A striking coral-and-rock arch — locally the “Howrah Bridge” — carved by the sea near Laxmanpur. Only reachable at low tide, over rockpools full of tiny marine life, so we time your visit to the tide chart.

Sunrise over a quiet beach at Sitapur, Neil Island, Andaman

Sunrise

Sitapur Beach

The easternmost beach, framed by low cliffs — the place to catch a Neil Island sunrise. Quiet, wild and worth the early alarm if you’re staying the night.

GETTING THERE

An easy hop, either way

Neil sits between Port Blair and Havelock, so it slots neatly into almost any island chain. Whether you come straight from the mainland gateway or hop over from Havelock, the crossing is short.

Best route: Port Blair → Havelock → Neil → Port Blair. You save backtracking, and Neil becomes the calm finish before your flight home. We plan the ferry order for you.

  • From Port Blair (~1.5 hrs): Private catamarans (Makruzz, Nautika) and government ferries run direct to Neil from Port Blair’s Haddo / Phoenix Bay jetties.
  • From Havelock (~45 min): The quickest link in the islands. Ideal if you’re finishing a Havelock stay and want a quiet night before heading back to Port Blair.
  • Getting around Neil: The island is tiny — cycle, auto or a short cab ride reaches every beach. Renting a bicycle is genuinely the nicest way to see it.
  • How long to stay: One night is the sweet spot — enough for Bharatpur, both sunsets and the rock bridge. Add a second night if you want to do absolutely nothing, beautifully.

GOOD TO KNOW

Neil Island questions, answered

The honest answers we give travellers on WhatsApp every day.

Is Neil Island worth visiting?

If you like your beaches quiet, absolutely. Neil (Shaheed Dweep) is smaller and far less crowded than Havelock, with calm coral shallows at Bharatpur, two lovely sunset/sunrise beaches, and the Natural Rock Bridge. It’s not the place for big water sports or nightlife — it’s for slowing right down. Couples and repeat visitors love it; if your trip is short and action-packed, you can skip it.

Neil or Havelock — which should I choose?

If you can only do one, choose Havelock — it has the famous beaches, the diving and the most to do. But they’re a natural pair, not rivals: Havelock for the highlights, Neil for the calm. Since Neil is only a 45-minute ferry from Havelock, most of our itineraries include both, with just one night on Neil.

How many days do I need on Neil Island?

One night is plenty to see Bharatpur, Laxmanpur, Sitapur and the Natural Rock Bridge without hurrying. Add a second night only if your idea of a holiday is doing very little in a very beautiful place — which, on Neil, is completely valid.
