Havelock’s beaches
Havelock has the most famous stretch of sand in the country. Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7) is regularly ranked among Asia’s best — a wide arc of white sand with forest behind it and a sunset that lives up to the photos. Then there’s Elephant Beach, reached by a short speedboat ride, where the reef sits close to shore. Kalapathar and Vijaynagar (Beach No. 5) round it out. Havelock’s beaches are bigger, busier, and more set up for a full day out.
Neil’s beaches
Neil trades scale for calm. Bharatpur Beach has shallow, still water and a coral reef right off the sand — the gentlest swim of any beach in the islands, and the one we point families with young kids toward. Laxmanpur Beach is the sunset spot, with the natural rock bridge (Howrah Bridge) reachable at low tide. Sitapur, on the far side, catches the sunrise. The beaches are smaller and closer together, so you can see all of Neil in a relaxed day.
Beach verdict: Havelock wins on wow-factor and variety; Neil wins on calm water and intimacy. If seeing Radhanagar is on your list, Havelock is non-negotiable. If you want a beach you can have almost to yourself, Neil delivers.

What you can do on Havelock
This is where Havelock pulls clearly ahead. It’s the diving capital of the Andamans, with dive sites like Barracuda City, The Wall, and Nemo Reef, plus first-timer intro dives for people who’ve never gone underwater. Add snorkeling and sea walking at Elephant Beach, kayaking through the mangroves (including bioluminescence kayaking on the right nights), and a full menu of water sports. If activity is the point of your trip, Havelock is the base.

What you can do on Neil

There’s a little scuba here too, but the range and the dive sites don’t match Havelock’s. The real “activity” on Neil is slower — cycling between beaches, walking to the rock bridge, watching the sunset. That’s the point of the island, not a shortcoming.

Stays on Havelock
Havelock has the widest range of accommodation in the islands after Port Blair — from backpacker guesthouses to boutique beachfront cottages and genuine luxury resorts near Radhanagar and Vijaynagar. If you want a proper resort with a pool, a spa, and beachfront dining, Havelock is where you’ll find it. Honeymooners are spoilt for choice here.
Stays on Neil
Neil is more limited — mostly small resorts, cottages, and homestays, with a handful of upmarket properties. It’s improving every year, but you won’t find the same density of high-end options as Havelock. What you get instead is quiet: fewer rooms, fewer crowds, and a more personal feel. For one relaxed night, that’s often exactly right.
Stay verdict: Havelock for choice and luxury; Neil for intimacy and calm. If you’re splitting your trip, spend the resort budget on Havelock and keep Neil simple.
Crowds & atmosphere
Havelock is the most visited island after Port Blair, and in peak season (December to January) the popular beaches and the Elephant Beach speedboats get genuinely busy. It has more cafés, more restaurants, and a light evening buzz. Neil is the opposite — even in season it stays sleepy, with early nights and empty stretches of sand. Neither is “better”; it depends on whether you want a bit of life around you or total quiet.
Honest note: if you’re travelling in peak season and crowds bother you, we’ll route you to Elephant Beach early in the morning and steer you to the quieter beaches for the afternoon. That kind of timing is exactly what a local operator is for.

Neil is generally a little easier on the wallet. Rooms and food tend to run cheaper than Havelock’s, mostly because Havelock has the premium resorts and the demand that comes with the famous beaches. That said, both islands span the full range from budget to premium, so your hotel choice matters more than the island itself. As a rough guide:
- Havelock: more premium and luxury options, so the ceiling is higher; plenty of budget guesthouses too
- Neil: lower average prices for stays and food; fewer high-end splurges available
- Ferries: the Havelock–Neil hop is short (around 45 minutes) and inexpensive, so adding Neil doesn’t add much travel cost

Getting there — the ferry link
Both islands are reached by ferry from Port Blair. Port Blair to Havelock is roughly 90 minutes to two hours on the private cruises (Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean); Port Blair to Neil is a little shorter. The key detail for anyone doing both: Havelock and Neil are only about 45 minutes apart by ferry, so the smart route is Port Blair → Havelock → Neil → Port Blair. You never double back.
A word of caution if you’re planning this yourself: book morning ferries, book them early (private cruises sell out in peak season), and always keep a buffer night in Port Blair before your flight home. Getting the ferry chain right is the fiddliest part of an Andaman trip, and it’s the main reason travellers hand this leg to a local operator.
